2. Communicate introductory information about self in a clear and concise manner.
3. Assess verbal and non-verbal communication.

Therapeutic nurse-client relationships (pdf file Available on
Angel)
Learning Activities:
Due Today
1. Prior to videotaping Learning Activity A, complete and submit the "Permission to Record Communication Sessions" form located on Angel to your lab faculty.
2. Before giving feedback to your peers in class today, read the guidelines for constructive feedback exchanges (Available on Angel).
3. Complete the “professional nurse—client relationship worksheet” available on
Angel.
Learning Activity A
The instructor will videotape each student introducing himself/herself to the class. Each person will 1) identify self by name, 2) tell where he/she is from, 3) explain for 1-2 minutes why he/she decided to study nursing at Seattle University, 4) state any prior experiences with communication skills classes or workshops, and 5) say what he/she expects to gain during this communication lab by the end of the quarter.
Everyone in class will briefly review the guidelines for giving and receiving constructive feedback. After the entire class is videotaped and the constructive feedback guidelines are reviewed, faculty will play the videotape, first without sound, asking students for feedback about non-verbal communication. Then the videotape will be replayed, this time with sound. More feedback will be elicited about verbal and non-verbal communication, congruence, and unexpected behaviors.
Learning Activity B
Discuss the professional nurse-client relationship worksheet found on Angel. What are the differences between therapeutic and social relationships? What is the nurse client relationship? Define therapeutic use of self.
